Thinning Hair In Women: Not Rare And Certainly Not Hopeless

Combat thinning hair in women and female-pattern alopecia (FPA) with HairSpa.The Symptoms, Causes And Hair Restoration Solutions At HairSpa

Hair loss is overwhelmingly associated with men. This is because the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male sex hormone, is the most common cause of hair loss. So it’s no wonder that male-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is commonly known, while this occurrence in women -- known as androgenetic alopecia or female-pattern alopecia (FPA) -- is far less recognized or acknowledged.

The fact that it’s not as talked about in the media does not mean hair thinning in women is a rare event. On the contrary, it is much more common than you’d think. About 10% of pre-menopausal women experience signs of female alopecia. This percentage increases greatly post-menopause, with 50-75% of women 65 years or older suffering from thinning hair and hair loss.

When women experience complete or patchy hair loss, it is known as female-pattern alopecia (FPA) or androgenetic alopecia. Its causes are unknown, but it is usually genetic -- about a fifth of people with this condition have a family history of alopecia. Most professionals agree that alopecia is an autoimmune condition, which is when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue.

There are three forms of alopecia:

    • Alopecia areata: patches of hair loss, usually on the scalp
    • Alopecia totalis: complete loss of scalp hair
    • Alopecia universalis: total loss of all body hair

Men generally experience hair loss in a well-defined pattern -- usually beginning above the temples and/or at the crown of the head, leading to a progressively receding hairline and eventually resulting in complete hair loss. Women, on the other hand, generally experience hair thinning instead of complete hair loss.

In general, FPA includes the following symptoms:

    • Hair thinning mainly on the top and crown of the scalp, usually beginning with a widening through the center hair part.
    • The front hairline generally remains intact.
    • The hair loss rarely progresses to total or near total baldness, as is common in men.

    • Aging
    • Changes in the levels of male hormones, or androgens -- e.g., after menopause, many women experience thinning hair on their head, while the hair on their face gets coarser
    • Family history of male-pattern baldness or FPA

Thinning hair in women may occur due to reasons other than FPA, including the following:

    • Breaking of hair from treatments, from twisting or pulling of hair or from hair shaft abnormalities present from birth
    • Certain skin diseases that lead to scarring of the hair follicles
    • Certain autoimmune diseases, like a form of alopecia (mentioned above)
    • Hormone problems, such as too much testosterone, or too much/too little thyroid hormone
    • Iron deficiency
    • Vitamin deficiency, especially lack of vitamin B
    • Medications such as chemotherapy and beta blockers
    • Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection
    • Temporary shedding of hair after a major illness, surgery or pregnancy
    • Dry weather conditions -- see this recent blog post
    • Poor water quality, e.g., excessively desalinated water -- see this the same blog post
